Dementia Care Training Program Offered by Family Home Health Care & Franciscan Sisters of Atonement at Graymoor Convent
TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (June 2015) – Approximately 20 caregivers with Family Home Health Care, a subsidiary of Dominican Sisters Home Health Services, are now certified to care for Dementia patients, thanks to a recent partnership between Family Home Health Care, Inc. and Franciscan Sisters of Atonement at Graymoor Convent. The training was held May 27 and May 28.
The two organizations co-sponsored a two-day Dementia Care Training Program so that area nurses, aides and other caregivers can properly assist seniors struggling with the illness. During the day-long, free training program, held at the Franciscan Sisters of Atonement at Graymoor Convent in Garrison, participants received an overview of Dementia, as well as insight on the various stages of dementia, including managing common behaviors and addressing family concerns.
“There are many facets to Dementia, so we were pleased that our staff could partake in this exceptional program,” said Mary Zagajeski, President/CEO of Dominican Sisters Family Health Service. “During the training, our caregivers interacted in teams to discuss, solve problems, and create camaraderie in their joint endeavor to support each other and those they care for in the community.”
“We made the decision to provide this training collaboration for our respective nurses and aides in an effort to assist them in dealing with the ever-growing issue of Dementia,” said Sharon Niman, Administrator with Family Home Health Care. “The program included collaborating with families to provide information and to be a part of the planning and implementation of the care plan.”
“Following in the spirit of St. Francis and our founders, Mother Lurana and Father Paul, we are missionaries who witness to Gospel values in our lives and we minister especially to the poor, the neglected, and the suffering,” said Sister Theresa Clarizio, Co-Coordinator of the Lurana Health Care Center at Graymoor. “It is our hope that this program helped caregivers care for Dementia patients so that they can have more fulfilling and meaningful lives.”
